What TruDefinition Duration Is

TruDefinition Duration is OC's mainline architectural shingle. The headline feature is the SureNail Strip — a fabric-reinforced nailing zone that runs across the entire shingle. Hit the strip with six nails and you get OC's full 130-mph wind warranty. Above the mainline there's TruDefinition Duration FLEX (impact-resistant for hail zones, Class IV), Duration STORM (similar impact upgrade with a slightly different profile), and Duration COOL Plus (reflective granules for cooling). Each tier has different warranty terms and different price points.

The Six Layers Of An Owens Corning Roof

OC's system warranty assumes a complete install. Six layers, in this order: deck protection (synthetic underlayment over the full deck), WeatherLock leak barrier (ice-and-water shield at eaves, valleys, and around penetrations — OC's branded version), ProEdge starter (factory-made starter strip, not cut shingles), the TruDefinition Duration field shingles (six nails through the SureNail strip), ProEdge hip-and-ridge (matching cap, not field shingle bent over), and VentSure ridge vent or equivalent attic ventilation. Without ventilation, the warranty doesn't apply. Pair the install with proper attic ventilation and the right flashing detail at penetrations and the system performs the way OC engineered it to.

What "OC Certified" Actually Buys You

Owens Corning runs a tiered contractor program similar to GAF's. The base level we hold confirms we're licensed, insured, trained on OC's install specs, and authorized to register the manufacturer's standard system warranty in the homeowner's name. Above that there are higher tiers (Preferred, Platinum) with additional volume and review requirements that unlock longer warranty packages. At our cert level we're qualified to install the full TruDefinition system to OC spec and register the standard limited lifetime warranty.

We do not over-promise warranty packages we're not authorized to register. Pairing the install with the right ventilation is part of what keeps the warranty enforceable — we handle that as a single scope, not a separate contractor.

Which OC Warranty You Actually Get

The standard manufacturer warranty on a TruDefinition Duration install at our certification level covers the shingles for a limited lifetime against manufacturing defects, prorated after a tier date — typically out to 50 years on TruDefinition Duration. Wind coverage runs to 130 mph as long as the SureNail strip is hit with the correct nail count (six nails per shingle, which is the upgraded high-wind spec we use on every install). The algae warranty is 10 years on standard TruDefinition (StreakGuard) and longer on the upgraded lines. None of this requires action on your part — we register everything in your name on the day of completion. Our workmanship warranty stacks on top: minimum 1 year on every install, transferable to the next homeowner if you sell the house.
